Burning Man: The Day ⚡ I Hate Flash

October 4, 2013 at 6:11 pm

I have some pretty mixed feelings about taking and posting pics from Burning Man (particularly of people).  However, these photos are awesome and give you a good idea of what it’s like at BM during the day Burning Man: The Day ⚡ I Hate Flash.

No one makes it to Burning Man

It’s pretty obvious to a Burner when the media makes uneducated references to Burning Man.  What’s worse is that it is so often portrayed simply as a drug fueled bacchanalian free for all, without the context of the culture of Burning Man.  (hence problems described in There and Back Again). This article, 10 years old, is still pretty much the best illustration of how shit goes down at Burning Man, as well as the journey […]

There and back again.

Burning Man 2013

Happy New Year everyone.  I’m back from my mostly annual pilgrimmage to that thing in the desert and ready to kick some major ass.  I did drop off the radar there for a while – new job, a dance project, health problems, and the usual insanity of prepping for BM.  I’ve also rethought the structure of this blog and am going to try and focus more on getting all the old school stuff up first, […]

Shuffle: The 15 Best Burning Man Costumes Ever | Ignite.me | Burner Style & Radical Self-Expression

February 20, 2013 at 4:34 pm

Over-the-top costuming is de rigeur 24/7 at Burning Man.  Everyone leaves good taste, shame, and restraint in Reno.  Leigh Bowery would be very, very jealous. And of course, my buddy Suliman places Numero Uno  I’m always blown away buy his ensembles, was thinking about doing a female version.  I’m also gobsmacked with the crocheted? gold warrior mask.  I’ll be doing a (ugh, massive) post on Burning Man eventually, but check out this top 15 list […]

Fast Forward: Anouk Wipprecht – Techno Sensual

One of my raver BFFs clued me in to Anouk Wipprecht a year or so ago.  I kinda freaked out.  Not only does her stuff look like old school raver clothes, but it also DOES STUFF.  Like paint itself, create smoke clouds, and makes drinks.  In my opinion, in most of  Wipprechts pieces she is successful at creating something unique, conceptual, and technologically challenging while maintaining a distinct look and aesthetic quality.  No small feat. […]

Rewind: SWEAR Jetty

SWEAR Jetty 01 white 1

I suspect that SWEAR Jettys may be the originators of the whole “fluffy” trend (ie faux fur leggings/boots/bootcovers).  While Elsa Schiaparelli predated them by about 60 years with her monkey fur boots.  But I doubt those ever made it to a rave.  I’d like to know when the Jettys were first produced and if anything similar was made before. See also my SWEAR Alternative company profile [Ed.] Alexander Wang has a contemporary version. [Ed.] Just found […]

Radical Self Reliance: Ilaniowear Patterns

Confession: I used to hate fun fur.  Haaaaaaaaaate it.  Sometime at BM 2008 I put on someones fur coat and ate my words HARD.  Yes, it’s gawdy, but it feel so fucking awesome after a night of partying.  And doubles as a blanket.  Fashion, good taste, age-appropriateness, and personal grooming standards are not and should not be socially expected at Burning Man (NOT the case at your local EDM massive). Or at least they operate […]

Resolutions

Sofia Bamboo Yoga Play

Actually did pretty well last year!  I made a lot of friends, was actually somewhat social, spent a lot of time with my aging puppy, took some poledancing classes (would’ve continued if I had the funds), started DJing and released a couple sets, did some dancing with a flaming pot on my head, I didn’t write a book but I did start this blog which is even better This year’s totally attainable-if-I-actually-try resolutions: 1. DJ […]

Happy NYE!!!

December 31, 2012 at 6:36 pm

Well this was quite the year in terms of personal development.  Still a ways to go, particularly professionally and financially, but I’m looking forward to the new year  as I’ve worked very very hard to build a stable foundation for myself.  Off to a jungle party tonight, then likely to the CoZo and a proper catch up with my old crew.  Believe it or not, in oh 14 years of partying, mostly in the GTA, […]
